Peanut & Pretzel SuperBars (For the Super Bowl)

I am the furthest thing you can imagine from a legitimate sports fan.

My “sport” of choice, long-distance trail running, has a total of maybe 3 premiere races and a dozen big names, none of which are recognizable to more than a few hundred running nerds like myself. My very favorite thing about my husband is that he doesn’t watch any televised sports. (That may, in fact, be why I married him in the first place.) Not only can I not tell you who is playing in the Super Bowl this Sunday, I couldn’t even work up the enthusiasm to do a quick google search and find out the answer.

I am, however, extremely enthusiastic about snack food. And that is where sports fans and I reach a mutual understanding.

Peanuts, pretzels, potato chips, and other salty foods are the stereotypical snacks of ball games. Heaven knows I’ve never kicked a salty treat out of bed, but when I started thinking about Super Bowl foods, I knew I had to stay true to my SugarHero roots and pair the salty with a smidge of sweet.

Enter…these sweet and salty Peanut & Pretzel SuperBars! The base is a wickedly good blondie-type dealie made with browned butter, and the topping is a thick layer of caramel crammed with salted peanuts and chopped pretzels. Of course this is me we’re talking about, so I had to finish them off with a drizzle of dark chocolate and a pinch of flaked sea salt.

They’re addicting. They’re what our friends across the pond would term “moreish.” I wanted to name them Crack Bars, or Man Bait, or Cut-A-Chump-To-Get-One Bars, but professional decorum reigned, and they’ve been dubbed SuperBars instead.

It doesn’t matter what they’re called, though, because we mostly just called them “awesome.” Want to put these in your pie hole? Head over to the Oh Nuts blog for the recipe and step-by-step photos!
