Tuesdays with Dorie: Granola Grabbers

Ah, “Granola Grabbers.” Such an aggressive, puzzling, tantalizing name for what turned out to be a fairly mediocre cookie.

I’m hesitant to say that I disliked these cookies, because there was nothing overtly offensive about them, but I will say that I was distinctly underwhelmed. There’s just too much going on! In addition to regular cookie ingredients like butter and sugar, they call for granola (I used my favorite homemade variety), two kinds of nuts, raisins, coconut, and wheat germ. (What, no kitchen sink?)

I even did these cookies a favor and replaced the raisins with a mix of chocolate chips and peanut butter chips, and how did they repay me? By tasting like the scraps found at the back of a snack cupboard–every bite had a different taste and texture, but the end result was more disjointed than exciting. It’s disappointing, but I guess I can’t expect to love every single Dorie recipe, right? Onward and upward.

I’m sad you didn’t like them! We happened to love them here – but I did mix the recipe up a little differently. Maybe next TWD you will like better! Welcome to the group!

  2. James says:

My family loved them. However, I replaced the peanuts and used cashews throughout. And, I used coconut gathered from one of our trees in the backyard.

Still, the recipe was a little off … 375F for 10-12 minutes? Please. Burn central.

Looking forward to the ice cream thingie next. That’ll be a challenge here where room temperature is 85F+.

  3. Melissa says:

Sorry you didn’t like them. You’re right – they’re kind of an “everything but the kitchen sink” kind of cookie. Hopefully next week will be better for you.

  4. Lori says:

oh, too bad! at least they didn’t take much time. i always hate it when i spend hours making something only to be unimpressed by it.

  5. Teanna says:

Yeah I keep going back and forth between liking them and not liking them! They look great, though!

  6. Christine says:

Oh I am so sorry that you didn’t care for these cookies. Your chocolate chips and peanut butter chips sound delicious.

  7. Judy says:

You’re right – we can’t all like every recipe! Your cookies look great and I’m sure someone would really appreciate your efforts.

  8. Rebecca says:

Ooh, nice pics! I thought these cookies were kind of … fugly … but you make them look good. ;)

  9. Pamela says:

I’m sorry you didn’t like them. I like the idea of putting in some PB chips, so maybe I will try to remember that for next time. I know we all won’t love each and every recipe, but I find that it’s still tough for me when I don’t like something. Anyway, they look great.

Welcome to the group. Sorry you didn’t like the cookies but oh well you can’t like everything in life! They were all right..not my favorite..now homemade oreos..that’s a different story!

Your pics are awesome! Sorry you did not like it, we added some spices!

I felt the same way about these cookies – just not great but I can’t put my finger on why that is, given all the great stuff in them (and I added choc chips too). Some other folks seemed to like them well enough, so chalk it up to personal taste, I guess. Lord knows it can’t be because Dorie can’t bake!

  15. rainbowbrown says:

Next time, next time! They look good, either way. :)

  16. Prudy says:

Oh darn, sorry they weren’t a hit for you. Better luck next week.

  17. Tara says:

I made some adaptations too, but my husband prefers good old chocolate chip cookies still!

  18. Jodie says:

I opted out this week for this exact reason- they didn’t sound like cookies that I (or my family) would like. Better luck next week!

  19. Jaime says:

sorry you didn’t love these but they still look great! i esp love the first photo :)

  20. Mike Spoodles says:

The good thing about TWD is that one week’s disappointment is soon forgotten in the next week’s incredible triumph! Chin up until the next :)

  21. Jules Someone says:

I’m sorry you didn’t like these more.

BTW, love the title of your blog. Eddie Izzard makes me laugh a lot.

I liked these cookies but didn’t love them. Yours are very pretty. btw, we have begun the CCC experiment, but haven’t made the NYT recipe yet. I will be interested to try it.
