Bake multi-colored cakes. Once they are cool, slice them into 3 layers each.
Spread frosting between each layer, then cover the cakes with a thin layer of frosting to trap in crumbs.
Twist the piping bag in different directions as you pipe stars over the entire surface to create a natural look.
