Bake multi-colored cakes. Once they are cool, slice them into 3 layers each.
Spread frosting between each layer, then cover the cakes with a thin layer of frosting to trap in crumbs.
Keep going until the entire cake is covered with buttercream stars. Twist the piping bag in different directions as you pipe to give it a varied look that's more natural.
